Red Kidney Beans Curry (Rajma Chawal)


  • 3 cans of Red Kidney Beans (I used the larger cans, about 1 1/2 can)
  • 2 inches of finely julienne or chiffonade ginger
  • 2 tbsp of Xacuti Masala (Goan Imports)
  • 1 medium chopped onions
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tsp of Cumin seeds
  • 1 green jalapeno cleaned and julienne
  • 2 cups of the kidney beans liquid
  • salt


  • Heat oil and add the Cumin seeds let it get a bit roasted for about 10-15 seconds.
  • Add the chopped onions and jalapeno and saute till translucent.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and saute again for 3-5 minutes till it soften.
  • Add in the xacuti spice and ginger. Saute for 1-2 minutes.
  • Next add the kidney beans and its liquid, salt to taste and cook covered for 20 minutes on medium heat .
  • Check occasionally and stir so that it does not stick to the bottom.
